ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Father Kaleeg Hainsworth is an author, speaker, poet, naturalist, activist, podcaster, full-stack developer, back-country educator, theologian, entrepreneur, publisher, professor of Ecology, parish priest of Holy Theophany Orthodox Mission (Gibsons, BC), and an Eastern Orthodox priest (OCA, Archdiocese of Canada). He has been writing and speaking for more than twenty years on such subjects as poetics, literature, Christian history, biblical exegesis, eastern spiritual traditions, family structure, addiction therapy, and ecology. He holds an honours BA in literature from the University of British Columbia and a masters in divinity (cum laude) from St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary in New York. He founded and served an Orthodox parish in Victoria, BC, for ten years, during which time he established a youth camp and an outreach centre for the poor as well as serving as a chaplain at the University of Victoria.

His academic interests, and areas of particular expertise and extensive training, include spiritual ecology, theological traditions in the East, poetry, family systems, addiction therapy, the philosophy and practice of non-violence, theologies of beauty, letterpress printing and bookbinding, mechanics, coding (HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, C++, etc), creative writing, surfing, skateboarding, squash (semi-pro), wilderness survival, gender studies, systema (Russian martial arts), liturgical development, early patristic literature, graphic design (extensive experience in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator) film production, business development, etc. Fr Hainsworth is the author of An Altar in the Wilderness (RMB, ’14), as well as numerous articles, manifestos, podcasts, and published studies. He runs an international digital publishing company, Bright Wing Media, which works with publishers, universities, non-profit organizations, and authors around the world. Additionally, Fr Kaleeg is the Editor of the Saint Katherine Literary Review (published out of the University of St Katherine, California), and sits on the board of several organizations promoting spiritual transformation through direct engagement with the natural world.

As an avid and respected naturalist, backcountry enthusiast and ecological educator, Father Hainsworth has led numerous guided trips into the BC wilderness, where he taught spiritual ecology, survival and team building to youth and adults alike.

Fr Kaleeg is, first and foremost, a single dad raising three awesome kids. He lives with his three kids in a house in East Vancouver (ie. the real Vancouver), British Columbia, and has endless time for anyone who wants to talk about the theology of beauty.
